In 1968, Bud Alderson of Sharpsville, had the
foresight of having IQHA present a Quarter Horse
to a deserving 4-H member from Indiana. With the
assistance of the Board of Directors and Purdue
University’s 4-H Office, Bud created an
application and proceeded to get 4-Hers from throughout
the state to apply
The concept behind the award was to provide recognition
to ten deserving 4-H horse/pony members; provide
one 4-H’er each year the opportunity to
own and train a registered Quarter Horse; and
to generate additional exposure for the Indiana
Quarter Horse Association.
Those first few finalists showed up at the 1968
Indiana State Fair and proceeded through an interview
process before the initial winner, Dana Magnuson
of Fort Wayne was selected. The first yearling,
Pasiano Bert, was purchased by the association
at the State Quarter Horse Sale held at the Marion
County Fairgrounds just four days prior to being
awarded to Dana.
From 1968 to today, IQHA has continuously sponsored
this award. Many individuals and corporations
have played a vital part in the sponsorship.
Long standing donors today continue to be:
- Bud and Madonna Alderson
- Duane and Bev McDavitt
- John and Judy Cloe
- Barb Wainscott
- Brackneys Western Store
- IQHA Amateur and Youth associations
- Waitt Farm Store
- Flohr Quarter Horses.

IQHA is fortunate in the members it has as an association.
Every year, someone within IQHA steps up and generously
donates a yearling to be awarded. In the past those
members have been: Geeslin Quarter Horses, Flohr
Quarter Horses, Alderson Quarter Horses, Squier
Quarter Horses, Mr. and Mrs. Dick O’Neal,
Ed Melzer, and Burger Quarter Horses.
The award has generated longstanding relationships
with IQHA with past winners. The 1973 winner, Beth
Lancaster Moon, has gone on to national prominence
showing Quarter Horses and Top Ten placings at the
AQHA World Show. The 1993 winner, Robyn Naile, has
won an AQHA High Point award in Amateur Barrel Racing
and is a consistent finalist yearly at the AQHA
World Show. Recently our 1995 winner, Stephanie
Moore, was the IQHA’s Website Coordinator
for two years.
Today, the association averages 50 to 60 applications
on a yearly basis from 4-H youth throughout Indiana.
The 4-H Horse Award Committee reviews those applications
and selects ten finalists to participate in an interview
during the Indiana State Fair in August. From those
ten finalists, one youth takes home a registered
Quarter Horse to continue their 4-H experience with.
